Definition of Nursing

1. Keperawatan : suatu bentuk pelayanan profesional yang merupakan bagian integral dari pelayanan kesehatan yang berdasarkan ilmu dan kiat keperawatan yang berbentuk pelayanan bio-psiko-sosial-spiritual yang komprehensif yang ditujukan kepada individu, keluarga dan masyarakat, baik yang sehat maupun yang sakit dalam sepanjang siklus kehidupan manusia.
2. The ICN Definition of Nursing (1889)
   Nursing encompasses autonomous and collaborative care of individuals of all ages, families, groups and communities, sick or well and in all setting. Nursing includes the promotion of health, prevention of illness and the care of ill, disabled and dying people. Advocacy, promotionof a safe environment, research, participation in shaping health policy and in patient and health systems management and educationare also key nursing roles.
3. ANA'S Definition of Nursing
   Nursing is the protection, promotion and optimization of health and abilities, preventation of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities and populations.
4. Virginia Henderson (1978)
   Nursing is primaliry assisting the individual (sick or well) in the perfomance of those activities constributing to health or its recovery (or to peaceful of death) that they would perform unaided if they had the necessary strenght will or knowledge.
